Loss To Learn

Yesterday, December 13 the varsity Carolina Forest Lady Panthers were defeated by the North Myrtle Beach Lady Chiefs. When the final buzzer sounded in North Myrtle Beach, the scoreboard read 42 to 28, however the game was much closer than the score indicated. The Panthers made multiple runs in the third quarter, but then gave up a few strings of baskets in the fourth quarter, setting the game out of hand. "The loss was disappointing," says senior Forward/ Center Marissa Simons. " However we can take positives from this loss by learning from our mistakes." The Panthers' next game will be this Friday, December 16 at Myrtle Beach. The Panthers go in with a four and two record to play the Seahawks.

Drill Team

The weekend the NJROTC Drill Team competed against many other schools, we did very well. We got six trophies in total, we got second place for academics, and the
rest were third place. It might not have been the best but we learned something from it, and that was to work harder. We will do better at our next competition.

Fun Saturday Nights

What is your idea of a fun Saturday night? To party, hang out with friends, go out, or hang out with yourself? If your bored with your friends, come up with something creative. Last night on Nov. 12, my friends and I walked atleast seven times around the block. We were so bored that we started getting creative. We found a empty sugar free candy spray and were kicking it. We didn't get amused with the kicking. What amused us is making it a challenge to make the bottle stand up. Only one out of the three of us got it to stand twice. That was until it went into the sewer. It sounds very dumb, but it was a great way to pass time. What's the most creative thing you've done with your friends?

What a close game

JV football played thursday night at Carolina Forest High at 6:30, they had played Sumter High School. It was a good game everyone says but it was so close the final score was 26-20 Carolina Forest panthers had lost and they got beat by the Gamecocks. In the first quarter there was only two touchdowns made both by Carolina Forest. The first one was made by 25 with 7:35 left the score was 6-0 and then they went for a one point and they had made it so then it was 7-0. After that with 2:24 left by player 21 made a touch down and then the score was 13-0, went for a one pointer again and made it once again 14-0. So far Carolina Forest was in the lead and was taking controll of the ball. Second quarter came and went with Carolina Forest making another touchdown with 4:44 left in the game 20-0 two point conversion failed. After they think they had this in the bag they should have thought again. Sumter finally gets the ball goes up feild with it to the touchdown mark and scores the first time it's 13-2- then next thing you know out of the middle of nowhere they tie the score 20-20. The buzzer went off final quarter came and went Sumter scored another touchdown and made the score uneven 26-20.

Substitute Assignment

I took the AP quiz and it was fairly easy, I just got confused on a few questions. I didn't get the chance to do it in class so i took it after school, i hope that isn't a problem.

AP Test Questions

I did about as well as I though I would do on this test. I got messed up on some of the technical and slight variation questions. I couldn't get the newsroom excercises to work.

CFHS Spirit Week

The spirit week for Carolina Forest High School was very interesting. I was attending a different school last year and spirit week then was very lame. People who actually participated looked awesome and some only did little things. Those who did black eyes for Injury Thursday looked realistic. It was tons of fun and neat. I hope to see much more fun things for next year. Lets go Panthers!!!

Online Quiz

I took the ten question quiz and got 100%. Fairly easy if you look at the questions and the positions they are in. Others were okay, but guessed and still got.

The Quiz

This quiz was a couple of trick questions, and it confused me. I didn't do to good on it because I was thinking of the notes we took and it went agaisnt all of them in a way. So I didn't do to good on the quiz, but I know what I need to work on now.

homework

I thought i did better but i really didn't. Some of those questions were really tricky. So be carful and read them slow.

Monday, While I am gone

Hello Young Journalists!

I have been staying out of your way on the blog, but since I am going to be out of class today, I wanted to leave you a few e-assignments for those of you who will be in class (those on the field trip will get credit for being excellently behaved young journalists in Columbia). You must complete the questions and the reading that the nice substitute gives you as well.

Follow this links, and complete the AP Style Quiz and the Newsroom 101 exercises (don't worry if you do poorly, but I think you will do better than you believe)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/ap-style-quiz-tests-your-editing-smarts/2011/07/28/gIQASfckfI_story.html

http://www.newsroom101.com/newsroom101/NR_exercises/newsroom001.htm

Then write a blog post about your performance (you don't have to mention your score, just talk about whether you did as well as you though you would or not).

Happy editing.

Carolina Forest High School's varsity cheerleading squad rises to the top. They ended up coming in third place behin Conway High ( 2nd place) and James Island (1st place). NROTC Upcoming Drill Meet

The NROTC Drill Team has been working like crazy to do good at our drill meets. Our next drill meet is Nov. 5 at Conway High School. Zachary Norris and the other commanding officers, along with the staff, have been working super hard! They've been doing their best to make us the best. We are doing these drill meets because we want to be known. We want to make them proud, so wish us luck!

Texting Teenagers

When most teenagers are at school, they tend to text. They will text all day if they know they are good at hiding their phones. This event accures everyday until they are caught. Some will get their phones back and still tend to text. What they are not taking into account is that this affects how you learn, the information you need, and your grades. Others who actually care, will pay attention and not text. Parents do not help if they just give you some speech and give you your phone back. If the student wants to graduate, then pay attention. If they don't, then what are you doing in school? Don't stop other students' learning for a teacher to catch you and get yourself into trouble. PUT THE PHONE AWAY! I once heard, "If there's a switch on it, it must be turned OFF". Have some respect for not only yourself and put the phone away. Save your brain!

The score was a shocker in JV football

There was a big game at Conway high school Thursday night. Against the two rivals Carolina Forest panthers and Conway tigers. It was a tight game through all off it till it was fourth quarter and the buzzer went off. In the first quarter of the game had just started and Carolina Forest had alreay made a touchdown with 7:42 left the score was 7-0. Then another touchdown for the panthers, it was a long pass by number 7. So they ended up going for a two point converstion by quarterback number 4 which made the score 15-0. Next thing you no conway scaters down the feild, number 6 the quarterback had thrown a pass to number 7 and ended up making a touchdown. So they go risky with it and take the same thing we did two point converstion made it with 2:26 left and the score now is 15-8.
Second courter nothing really takes place till 1:29 left tigers make another touchdown by the quarterback. Scores 15-16. Then third courter came around and number 6 on the tiger side made another touchdown, which brings us to 22-15 Conways in the lead. After the last quarter the panthers thought we will come back and beat them take the ball and run this feild. Well once again another touchdown by number 8 on Conways side which made the final score 28-15. Yes panthers were sad we lost but they all say will get them next time.
Landon on the football team said they played there best and worked as hard as they could. Then i talked to number 1 JP and he said the same thing but another thing he added was i thought we would have had this. It was a close game but will defeat them next time.

Johann Forrest is an Orchestral Wonder

In the play "1776" that was recently performed by Carolina Forest High School, Johann Forrest played a piece called "He Plays the Violin" on his viola. He also played the role of a messenger/soldier (his part wasn't named). "I was very nervous during the first performance. During rehearsal, we [the other cast members] were often messing up lines and I just couldn't get the right sound out of my viola. After that though, everybody performed flawlessly and I am very confident of my performance." Johann is a member of the orchestra, where he is the first chair viola. This weekend, he plans to travel to Charleston where he will audition for the Senior Regional Orchestra. When asked how he felt about his coming audition he replied "I am sure that I will do well in the audition along with all of the others who are participating."

Introduction to National Honors Society

The National Honors Society will be having it's first introduction ceremony on September 30 at 9 a.m-10 a.m in the auditorium. Several classes will be invited to attend the assembly, along with the members of the National Honors Society. The ceremony is about recognizing the new members and what the National Honors Society stands for. The classes selected to attend are given a great opportunity and should take advantage of it. To figure out if your class is going, discuss it with your 1st block teacher.

Teacher Profiles

I have got my list of new teachers, but no room numbers or emails? Sometimes I really wish things could just be a little more easier. Why such a difficult thing to post about? I dont know, but I really don't like it. More information on whatever I get, I am working on. I'd have a post up everyday if I could write about something interesting like "Everyday Life" or "How A Teenagers Life Works", but I'm trying.

Band

I would like my beat to be the Carolina Forest band. I would be a good journalist for this because I used to be in band. I know what they do and how hard they work. I would make sure I know what they are doing at all times. Johnny Plump

Theater

I want my beat to be theater. I think that I could do good with this because im in the theater class and I help out a lot with backstage for plays at the school.

Thursday, August 25, 2011

I would like to have theatre as my beat. I feel theatre would be an easy beat for me because I have Ms. Hall as a drama teacher and think it would be very easy for me to get information. I find theatre very interesting. I feel I would do a very good job covering theatre. I would appreciate if I could have theatre as my beat. Thank you.
-Ashley
I'll be pleased with which ever beat you assign me to.

Project Questions???

OK, who has a question about their First Amendment project? How can I help you (no, I'm not going to just give you an "A" or do it for you) :P

show choir

I would like to do show choir as my beat. My reasoning for this is because ive always gone to show choir performances so i would know what i'm getting myself into. Another reason is i have background knowledge on performing so i think my experience will really pay off.

Welcome

Hello Young Jounalists!

Welcome to Journalism 1! We will be using this blog as a way to publish your first journalistic endeavours. Before we start publishing, though, there are a few things we need to go over.

               1) Blogging is PUBLIC. Your parents, teachers, administrators, and the ENTIRE WORLD has access to what goes on here. Therefore, be professional. (No bias, no put-downs, etc)
               2) Blog often. News is only good if it is current.
               3) Blog well (use your AP style rules)

Here is your first assignment:

Every journalist is class will be given a "beat" - a specific topic or area- to cover on our blog. This could be a sports team, club, class, the administration, etc. In a post, tell me what area of school life you want to talk about, what you want to be your beat. You must defend your choice- as there will be many people trying to cover the same beat. If you have an idea for a beat that is different, tell me why I should even bother allowing you to write about it. Posts should be 4-5 sentences, and make sure you check your spelling and grammar. Posts are due by Friday, August 26th at 3:30.
